India is the UK’s largest source of Skilled Worker visa applicants. In 2024-25, Indian nationals received approximately 58,000 Skilled Worker visas, nearly 40% of all grants. The pathway offers a clear route to permanent settlement: 5 years on a Skilled Worker visa leads to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), and then British citizenship after a further year. However, the April 2024 salary threshold increase to GBP 38,700 has made this route more selective.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for a Skilled Worker visa, you need four things: a job offer from a UK employer with a valid sponsor licence, a role at RQF Level 3 or above (equivalent to A-level standard), a salary meeting the threshold, and English language proficiency at B1 level.
Salary threshold: The general threshold is GBP 38,700 per year or the “going rate” for your occupation (whichever is higher). The going rate is set by occupation code and varies significantly. Software developers (SOC 2134) have a going rate of GBP 42,100; registered nurses (SOC 2231) have GBP 27,000 under the health and care discount.
New entrant discount: If you are under 26, switching from a Student visa, or in a recognised graduate training programme, you qualify at 70% of the going rate (minimum GBP 30,960). This is particularly relevant for recent Indian graduates from UK universities.
Health and care workers: NHS and social care roles have a separate, lower salary threshold of GBP 29,000. This includes nurses, paramedics, physiotherapists, and social workers. Health and care workers are also exempt from the Immigration Health Surcharge.
Finding a UK Sponsor
Unlike Australia’s 189 visa, you cannot apply for a UK Skilled Worker visa independently. You must have a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) from a licensed UK employer. The Home Office publishes a Register of Licensed Sponsors listing all approved employers.
The most common paths for Indian applicants to secure UK sponsorship include: applying directly to large employers known to sponsor (NHS trusts, TCS, Infosys UK, Wipro UK, major banks, Big Four accountancies), using UK job boards (Indeed UK, LinkedIn, NHS Jobs), working with recruitment agencies specialising in international placement, and intra-company transfer from Indian IT consultancies with UK offices.
The IT consulting route remains one of the most established channels. Companies like TCS, Infosys, HCL, and Wipro maintain UK sponsor licences and regularly transfer Indian employees. However, salaries must now meet the GBP 38,700 threshold, which has reduced the volume of transfers at entry level.

| Item | Cost (GBP) | Cost (INR approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Visa application fee (3 years, salary under £48,500) | £719 | 75,500 |
| Immigration Health Surcharge (3 years) | £3,120 | 3,27,600 |
| IELTS for UKVI | £180 | 18,900 |
| TB test (India) | £35 | 3,500 |
| Biometrics | £20 | 2,000 |
| Total (single, 3-year visa) | ~£4,074 | ~4,27,500 |
The Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) is the largest cost component at GBP 1,035 per year per person. A family of four on a 3-year visa would pay GBP 12,480 in IHS alone. Many UK employers now cover the visa fee and IHS as part of relocation packages — always negotiate this.
Note: Health and care workers (including nurses) are exempt from IHS, reducing their total visa cost to approximately GBP 900–1,000.
The Path to ILR and Citizenship
Year 1-5: Work for your sponsor employer (you can change sponsors, but each switch requires a new visa application). Maintain continuous UK residence (maximum 180 days abroad per 12-month period). Your salary must continue to meet the threshold throughout.
Year 5 — ILR application: After 5 continuous years, apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain. Requirements: pass the Life in the UK test (GBP 50), prove English at B1 level (already met through your initial visa), show your salary still meets the going rate, and pay the ILR fee (GBP 2,885). Processing takes 6–8 weeks for standard service or 1 working day for the super priority service (GBP 800 extra).
Year 6+ — Citizenship: After holding ILR for 12 months, you can apply for British citizenship (GBP 1,580). You must pass the Life in the UK test again (if not passed within the last year) and meet the residence requirement. British citizenship grants visa-free access to 187 countries and the right to live and work in the UK permanently.
Processing Times
Applications from India are currently processed at the VFS Global centres in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Chandigarh, and Ahmedabad. Standard processing takes 3–8 weeks from the date of biometrics. Priority service (GBP 500) reduces this to 5 working days, and super priority (GBP 800, limited availability) offers next-working-day decisions.
Most Indian IT professionals applying through well-known sponsors (TCS, Infosys, NHS trusts) receive decisions within 3–4 weeks on standard processing. Complex cases involving smaller sponsors or unusual circumstances may take 6–8 weeks.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the minimum salary for a UK Skilled Worker visa in 2026?
The general salary threshold is GBP 38,700 per year. However, some occupations on the Immigration Salary List have a lower threshold of GBP 30,960. New entrants (under 26, graduate trainees, or switching from Student visa) qualify at 70% of the going rate. Healthcare workers including nurses have separate, lower thresholds set by NHS pay bands.
How much does the UK Skilled Worker visa cost from India?
Total costs for a 3-year visa include: application fee GBP 719–1,420, Immigration Health Surcharge GBP 3,120 (GBP 1,035/year x 3 years), English test GBP 170–200, tuberculosis test INR 3,500, and biometrics INR 2,000. Total upfront cost is approximately GBP 4,000–4,800 (INR 4.2–5.0 lakh). Many UK employers cover the visa application fee and IHS as part of relocation packages.
Can I get permanent residency (ILR) through the Skilled Worker visa?
Yes. After 5 continuous years on a Skilled Worker visa, you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR). Requirements include: continuous UK residence, meeting the salary threshold at the time of ILR application, passing the Life in the UK test (GBP 50), and English at B1 level. Do I need IELTS for the UK Skilled Worker visa?
You must prove English at CEFR B1 level. Accepted tests include IELTS for UKVI (minimum 4.0 in each component), PTE Academic UKVI, and Trinity College ISE. If you have a degree taught in English from a majority English-speaking country, you may be exempt. Indian degrees taught in English are NOT automatically exempt — you will typically need to take an approved test.
