What exactly is this: asylum, temporary protection, humanitarian admission, resettlement or another protection mechanism?

This is an application for asylum, also called international protection; a positive decision grants either asylum or subsidiary protection.

Which population, circumstances or geographic group does the mechanism cover?

It covers people who fear return because of persecution, serious human-rights violations, violence, or armed conflict.

Where can protection be requested, and is this a direct application, border/in-country request, referral or other process?

Asylum is requested directly: at a land border crossing point (inform the Police Officer at the checkpoint), at Václav Havel Airport Prague (inform the Police Officer at passport control), or from inside Czechia at the Foreign Police office at the Reception Centre in Zastávka u Brna or at a regional Foreign Police office.

    If you are already in Czechia, you can make an asylum application at the Foreign Police office located at the back entrance of the Reception Centre in Zastávka u Brna (just around the corner from the main entrance into the administrative building). You can also apply for asylum at one of the regional Foreign Police offices.

What happens after the request: registration, family handling, major support and rights where officially stated?

After the request, applicants are taken to the Reception Centre in Zastávka u Brna for registration and first steps including identification and medical examination; applying does not automatically end detention. During the procedure applicants have the right to an interpreter and to free legal aid, may stay in one of 3 accommodation centres, can access public healthcare, may work 6 months after registration of the application, and children are assisted to enrol in primary school.

Which competent authority, UN body or official assistance channel should the person use?

The official help channels are UNHCR, which can be contacted at any time during the asylum procedure, and its partner organisations; UNHCR's partner Organization for Aid to Refugees (OPU) provides free legal aid for applying and during the procedure, and at Prague Airport the Association for Integration and Migration (SIMI) can advise on the procedure.
