What investment option or options qualify?

Direct investment in China that has been stable for 3 consecutive years with a good tax record. The paid-in registered capital must meet one of four options: (1) total of USD 500,000 or more in encouraged industries listed in the national Catalogue for the Guidance of Foreign Investment Industries; (2) total of USD 500,000 or more in China's western region or national key poverty-alleviation counties; (3) total of USD 1,000,000 or more in China's central region; (4) total of USD 2,000,000 or more in China.

What official minimum amount, tier or threshold applies to each relevant option?

The published measures set alternative minimum paid-capital totals: USD 500,000 for encouraged industries; USD 500,000 in western China or designated key poverty-alleviation counties; USD 1 million in central China; or USD 2 million under the general China tier. These are investment amounts. The application fee is separately CNY 1,500 and card production CNY 300.

How long must the investment be maintained and what continuing ownership, investment or physical-presence conditions are important?

Investment must be direct and stable for the three consecutive years before application, with good tax records. After permanent residence is granted, the holder must normally spend at least three months per year in China; an approved exception still requires at least one year in five years. The cited provisions do not state an automatic investment exit or refund.

Which family members can be included where officially stated, and what broad residence/work rights result?

The qualifying investor spouse and unmarried children under 18 may apply under the linked permanent-residence category. Article 48 of the Exit and Entry Administration Law permits permanent residents to reside and work using their permanent-residence documents; entry and exit require a passport and those documents.

What status is obtained, how is it renewed, what longer-term residence/citizenship direction is officially stated, and what happens to the investment when relevant?

Approved applicants receive a Foreign Permanent Resident ID Card issued by the Ministry of Public Security (applicants abroad first receive a confirmation form, obtain a D visa and collect the card within 30 days of entry). The card is valid five years for under-18s and ten years for adults. It is renewed within the month before expiry, or within a month of changed details, at the city-level public security authority of long-term residence, which renews or replaces it within one month; loss or damage requires prompt replacement. The Ministry may cancel status for endangering national security or interests, court-ordered deportation, fraud, or residence of less than three months a year or one year in five without approval. No citizenship direction or investment rule is stated.
