Non-Chinese permanent residents of Hong Kong or Macao may apply for this mainland travel permit through the authorised China Travel Service organisations. It is not the permit for Chinese-national SAR residents.

What maximum stay, rolling-period rule, validity and entry rules apply?

The permit is valid for five years and allows multiple mainland visits of no more than 90 days each. Renewing or replacing it inside the mainland does not restart the stay count from the original entry.

What important funds, accommodation, invitation, insurance, onward-travel or passport evidence may be required?

Applicants apply in person with the form/photo, permanent-resident identity evidence, a recognised ordinary passport valid at least six months and a nationality certificate issued within the preceding six months. Under-18 applicants attend with a guardian and proof of guardianship; the specified alternative identity evidence applies to Hong Kong applicants under 11.

    A: To apply for the Permit, the originals and copies of the following documents are required: (I) Application Form for Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Residents (Non-Chinese Citizens) filled in completely and accurately, with the applicant's recent photo pasted; (II) Valid Hong Kong or Macao permanent identity card. A non-Chinese Hong Kong permanent resident under the age of 11 who has not obtained a Hong Kong permanent identity card may provide the Notice of Application for Access to Information issued by the Hong Kong Immigration Department, which states that he/she is a Hong Kong permanent resident. Where/how is permission obtained when required, and under what important circumstances can a stay be extended or changed?

First applications go through the authorised Hong Kong or Macao China Travel Service. Processing is within 20 working days after acceptance; first application costs HKD 260, and mainland renewal/replacement CNY 230. The permit must be collected within 12 months of the scheduled date. For force majeure or other justified need beyond 90 days, an extension of up to 90 days may be requested from local municipal-level-or-above public security exit-entry.
