What maximum stay, rolling-period rule, validity and entry rules apply?

The stay is up to 30 days within Hainan Province. Counting starts at midnight after the entry day. Applicable bilateral or unilateral exemption rules take precedence where their conditions are met.

    The stay period specified in any of the aforementioned policies is calculated from 0:00 on the day after the day of entry. For the individuals who meet the requirements specified in the bilateral visa exemption agreements and the unilateral visa exemption policies of China, the relevant regulations shall prevail.

What important funds, accommodation, invitation, insurance, onward-travel or passport evidence may be required?

On entry the traveller must present the passport or other international travel document and any entry permission to border inspection and be admitted after inspection. A foreigner staying somewhere other than a hotel must register with the local police within 24 hours of arrival.

Where/how is permission obtained when required, and under what important circumstances can a stay be extended or changed?

To remain beyond the visa-free period for non-diplomatic, non-official reasons, the entrant must submit supporting evidence and may be issued a stay permit of corresponding length. Stay-permit applications are accepted by public security exit-entry authorities at prefecture-level city level or above, as entrusted by the National Immigration Administration, and are made in person, although an inviting entity or person, a relative or a specialised service agency may apply on the applicant's behalf where the rules allow.
