What exactly is this: asylum, temporary protection, humanitarian admission, resettlement or another protection mechanism?

This is temporary protection, an exceptional EU mechanism implemented in Belgian law after a Council of the European Union decision. It is distinct from an ordinary visa; a person may also lodge an international-protection request, whose examination is suspended while temporary protection continues.

Which population, circumstances or geographic group does the mechanism cover?

It covers Ukrainian nationals and qualifying family members whose primary residence was in Ukraine before 24 February 2022, certain stateless or other third-country nationals and their families who had equivalent protection in Ukraine, and some third-country nationals with permanent residence in Ukraine who cannot safely and sustainably return. Under Council Implementing Decision (EU) 2026/1912, from 31 July 2026 a new grant of temporary protection also requires proof of compliance with Ukrainian military obligations; this condition does not apply to a person who was already enjoying temporary protection in a given Member State before or on 30 July 2026 and has continuously retained that status in that Member State since.

Where can protection be requested, and is this a direct application, border/in-country request, referral or other process?

Applicants must appear in person at Belgium's temporary-protection registration centre at 68 Rue Belliard, 1000 Brussels. The listed opening time is 8:30 a.m.; if capacity is exceeded, the centre may invite a person to return on a later date.

What happens after the request: registration, family handling, major support and rights where officially stated?

At registration, applicants present documents showing that they fall within a covered group and proof of residence in Ukraine before or on 24 February 2022; registration includes identity and biometric data. If the conditions are met, a certificate is issued and taken to the municipality, which issues a temporary A residence card. Beneficiaries may work with the A card or Annex 15 while waiting for it.

Which competent authority, UN body or official assistance channel should the person use?

Belgium's Immigration Office handles the registration process and the municipality issues the residence document. DOFI states that temporary protection is extended until 4 March 2028 and that card renewal may be requested at the commune from 4 January 2027. The official source does not provide a full support-service directory or the transition rule for existing beneficiaries.
