Which family relationships qualify?

The route covers an unmarried child under 18 of an adult international-protection beneficiary, including a child of the sponsor's spouse or partner. For a non-joint child, parental authority and dependency conditions apply. The child's age when the sponsor applied for international protection is relevant; a limited post-decision filing window may apply if the child turns 18 during or shortly after the grant.

Limits of the record
  • The exact age rule can depend on the date the protection application was lodged and the stated limited post-grant exception.

Who may sponsor or bring the family member, and what immigration/citizenship status must that person hold?

The sponsor is an adult foreign national admitted to stay in Belgium as a recognised refugee or subsidiary-protection beneficiary. The application must include the decision granting that status.

Limits of the record
  • This answer is limited to an adult sponsor admitted under international-protection status.

What is important for proving marriage, partnership, parentage, custody, dependency or another qualifying relationship?

Official documents proving descent must be provided. If the child is not the couple's common child, the sponsor or spouse/partner must exercise parental authority, including custody, and the child must be dependent; where authority is shared, the other holder must consent. The Immigration Office may consider other pre-entry evidence or investigate if official documents are unavailable.
