What exact activity, role or purpose qualifies?

The route covers European Solidarity Corps (ESC) volunteer placements, which Belgium's federal Immigration Office still handles under the statutory residence chapter labelled 'European Voluntary Service' (EVS). Current Flemish and Brussels authorities expressly connect the ESC to that former label, while Wallonia's current page still uses EVS wording without an express ESC equivalence, so the ESC mapping is confirmed for Flanders and Brussels but not for Wallonia.

See recorded sources
Limits of the record
  • No current Walloon authority statement expressly mapping ESC placements to the EVS residence/work authorisation was found; do not infer that bridge from programme history alone.

What organisation, institution, religious body, charity, teacher or host must support the activity?

The volunteer organisation or host applies to the competent regional government; the federal residence component and regional work component are processed together under the single-application procedure for the federal long-stay route. Flanders requires an approved voluntary-service programme and says JINT, the ESC national agency, checks placements. Brussels expressly requires the ESC programme to be approved. Wallonia's current page asks for placement confirmation from the national EVS implementation agency.

Limits of the record
  • Programme approval and competent regional workflow differ. A European ESC Quality Label alone is not presented here as a substitute for each Belgian immigration/work-authorisation requirement.
  • Application — host applies
This authorisation should be applied for by your volunteer organisation to the competent regional government in the form of an application for authorisation to work
  • Application procedure — single application
The application procedure for an authorisation for volunteer is a "single application procedure", where the authorisation includes both the authorisation to stay (“residence” component) and the authorisation to work (“work” component).
  • Placement — JINT
De plaatsing van de jongere bij een vrijwilligersorganisatie wordt, voor Vlaanderen, gecontroleerd door het nationaal agentschap voor het European Solidarity Corps, de VZW Jint.
  • First application — ESC approval
La preuve que le programme de volontariat auquel le volontaire participe a été approuvé dans le cadre du Corps européen de Solidarité
  • Documents — national agency placement
Copie attestation de l’Agence nationale pour la mise en œuvre du Service Volontaire Européen confirmant le placement du volontaire

What proves the placement, role, affiliation, experience or cultural/religious/voluntary activity?

Federal residence documents include a valid passport or equivalent travel document, sufficient resources for subsistence and return, health insurance, medical certificate, a criminal-record extract for an adult, the volunteer agreement and a host undertaking for specified public costs; suitable accommodation must be documented when the host provides it. Regions add placement or programme approval: the Brussels agreement must describe programme, duration, placement and supervision, hours, resources for subsistence and housing, and pocket money, and Flanders identifies JINT placement monitoring.

Limits of the record
  • This is a combined overview, not one complete document checklist. Fees, translations, insurance wording and regional additions must be checked in the exact filing jurisdiction.

Can the person receive salary, pocket money, accommodation, meals or reimbursement? Can they undertake other work?

The host may guarantee subsistence and accommodation, and regional agreements may provide housing and pocket money; the federal material treats subsistence and return resources as proof of means. Flanders expressly requires a statement that the volunteer will hold no other employment in Belgium during the placement; this requirement is stated only for Flanders. No broad right to take unrelated paid work is established.

Limits of the record
  • Belgian-wide salary/tax/social-security classification of pocket money and benefits was not confirmed. Outside-work rules remain regional; the Flemish agreement clause must not be extrapolated nationally.

How long can they stay, can they change host/activity, can family accompany, and can the status be extended?

The federal route and the regional programme pages set a maximum of 12 months overall. The federal Immigration Office says its volunteer authorisation is not renewable; Flanders likewise says its authorisation cannot be extended. Brussels accepts a renewal filing only within a programme whose total duration cannot exceed 12 months. Wallonia's current page also states a 12-month programme maximum. The official sources do not establish an automatic right to change host or activity or to bring family under this volunteer authorisation.

Limits of the record
  • The duration cannot exceed 12 months on the sources reviewed, but renewal mechanics differ by region. Host/activity changes and family accompaniment require a separate competent-authority decision; neither is assumed automatic.

These are the answers currently recorded in the catalogue. A missing or partial answer is not an eligibility decision.
