What's actually changing
New Zealand has spent years recruiting tradespeople on work visas while offering them no serious road to residence. That contradiction ends on 24 August. The Trades & Technician pathway gives welders, fitter-welders, automotive electricians and a long list of technician roles a defined route built on qualifications and time served — not university points. One caution the headlines skip: the pathway applies to a specified list of occupations, and the list is precise — Welder (ANZSCO 322313) is on it, while Electrician (General) and Plumber (General) are not. Check your exact occupation on the official eligible-roles list before planning. The Skilled Work Experience pathway does something similar for professionals whose careers outgrew their paperwork: five years of doing the job counts, degree or no degree.
The third change is quieter but matters if you're mid-process: wage thresholds are being simplified across the category, and a five-month transition buffer protects applications already moving. Which settings apply to you depends on timing — assume nothing, confirm everything.
Who gains
The trades, first and most. A Level 4-certified welder with four years on the tools — 1.5 of them in New Zealand at the median wage — goes from "no realistic SMC route" to "eligible." That is the headline of this reform.
Experienced professionals without registration or degree-heavy CVs come second. Two years in New Zealand at 1.1× the median wage is a résumé test, not a credentials test.
And anyone already in-country on an Accredited Employer Work Visa is quietly accumulating eligibility every month. Both new pathways run through NZ-based experience — if you're there, the clock is already yours.
Who needs to move now
If you have a draft EOI and qualify under the current settings, there is no version of events where letting it expire on 24 August helps you. Locked-in rules beat unknown rules; submit.
If your pay hovers just under the wage line, that's the variable to fix first — the experience thresholds are fixed, the salary is negotiable.
Before or after 24 August: the short version
- Qualify today, draft EOI open → submit before the 24th.
- Don't qualify today, but hold a trade cert or five years' experience → the 24th is your opening; spend these three weeks assembling employment letters, wage records and qualification evidence.
- Outside NZ, no NZ experience yet → the sequence is work visa first, residence clock second. The new pathways don't skip that step; they reward it.
What doesn't change
Skilled employment or a job offer, health and character checks, English. The reform widens who can qualify; it doesn't lower the floor. The full picture of New Zealand's residence routes sits alongside these two additions.
Where NZ now sits against the field
More open to trades and experience-based profiles than Australia's points-tested 189; less credential-obsessed than the UK's degree-first system, which is simultaneously cutting its mid-skilled list. If your profile is hands and years rather than diplomas, the Pacific just picked a side.

What happens to my draft EOI on 24 August 2026?
It expires. Submit before that date or start again under the new settings.
Do tradespeople qualify for NZ residence now?
From 24 August, yes — if your occupation is on the specified trades and technician list: a Level 4 or higher qualification, four years of post-qualification experience, 1.5 of them in New Zealand at the median wage.
What does 1.1× the median wage mean in dollars?
The SMC wage threshold tracks the official median wage — NZD 35.00 an hour since 9 March 2026, per Immigration New Zealand. It moves when the median is updated; check the current figure on Immigration New Zealand before relying on a number you read elsewhere.
Can I apply from outside New Zealand?
Both pathways require NZ-based experience years, so plan work visa first, residence second.
