The line that decides it

Passive means the money arrives whether you work or not. If your income requires opening a laptop, it's active — and ERV consulates test exactly this. Retirees, landlords, dividend-holders: ERV. Employees and freelancers: DNV. Mixed income: the passive slice alone must clear the ERV bar, or you're a DNV case.

The tax fine print worth one paragraph

183+ days makes you Italian tax-resident on worldwide income. Freelancers may fit the forfettario (15%, 5% startup rate, conditions apply); the impatriate regime demands a multi-year commitment most nomads can't give. Regime selection can halve — or double — your take-home; it's an accountant conversation, not a blog decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I work remotely on Italy's Elective Residence Visa?

No — the ERV prohibits all work, including remote work for foreign employers; the New York consulate's wording is that funds cannot derive from any form of employment. That income belongs on the Digital Nomad Visa.

How much income does Italy's Digital Nomad Visa require?

The 2024 decree sets the floor at three times the minimum level for exemption from healthcare co-payments. Italian consulates in the US state this as €24,789 per year; London applies €25,500 (3 × €8,500). Either way it is currently the lowest digital-nomad income bar in the EU — alongside a degree or equivalent professional qualification and at least six months' remote-work experience.

How much passive income for the ERV?

A ministerial floor of roughly €31,000 per year — Table A of the Ministry of the Interior directive of 1 March 2000 — which consulates treat as a starting point, commonly apply per applicant, and routinely expect comfortably exceeded.

Does the DNV lead to permanent residency?

Yes — renewable annually, with permanent residence possible after 5 years of legal residence and citizenship eligibility after 10.
