What is important for proving marriage, partnership, parentage, custody, dependency or another qualifying relationship?

Answer not available

What important financial, accommodation, insurance or maintenance responsibilities apply?

Answer not available

How does the application work at a high level, what rights does the family member receive, how long does the status last, and how can it become independent or longer-term where officially stated?

The permit must not be applied for unless directed by the Department of Immigration; the application is made with a covering letter to the Director General of Immigration/Regional Immigration Officer. The permit specifies its conditions and validity, with no period over ninety days without the Director-General's approval; renewal requires a covering letter giving reasons and the prescribed fee. The official source does not state work rights or a path to longer-term status.

  • Statutory text read is the Immigration and Deportation Act No. 18 of 2010 together with Amendment Act No. 19 of 2016 as published on the Department site; any later amendments were not checked.
