The VR visa is issued to people entering Viet Nam to visit relatives or for other purposes. Visa conditions include holding a passport or international travel document and having an inviting or sponsoring agency, organisation or individual in Viet Nam, except in cases set out in the law. The law also provides for electronic visas, and citizens of countries unilaterally exempted from visas by Viet Nam receive 45 days of temporary residence. The VR visa is issued to people entering Viet Nam to visit relatives or for other purposes. Foreigners in transit by sea are visa-exempt and must stay in the transit area of the seaport while the ship is anchored; if they need to exit through a different border gate, they may be considered for a VR visa.

Where/how is permission obtained when required, and under what important circumstances can a stay be extended or changed?

The inviting or sponsoring agency, organisation or individual carries out the visa procedure at the immigration management agency. After being notified, the foreigner submits a passport, visa application form and photo at a Vietnamese visa-issuing authority abroad. To extend temporary residence, the foreigner must ask the inviting or sponsoring party to carry out the procedure at the immigration management agency or the competent Ministry of Foreign Affairs authority. Visas cannot change purpose except in cases set out in the law, and an expired visa may be considered for a new visa.
