What exactly is this: asylum, temporary protection, humanitarian admission, resettlement or another protection mechanism?

A two-stage transfer scheme under which the Secretary of State transfers a limited number of people from France to the UK, with the total correlating with the number of people removed from the UK under the pilot arrangement on the prevention of dangerous journeys. It grants entry clearance for up to 3 months (no work, study or public funds); it is not itself asylum — anyone wanting to stay must apply for another permission, such as a visa or asylum, after arrival.

Which population, circumstances or geographic group does the mechanism cover?

People who are in France, with their partner and children under 18 if they are also in France. Excluded: people not in France; those who previously entered or arrived in the UK illegally; those with international protection from any other country or officially recognised as stateless by any other country; EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland nationals and their family members; those with immigration permission in France; and those previously refused entry clearance on the scheme. Applicants must be 18 or over unless applying as part of a family group with a parent aged 18 or over.

Where can protection be requested, and is this a direct application, border/in-country request, referral or other process?

A direct online application from France: first an Expression of Interest, submitted within an application window set by the Secretary of State (applications from outside France are not considered). Each adult then confirms they are in France via email/text within 24 hours. If selected, the Home Office completes the entry clearance application on the applicant's behalf and gives an in-person biometrics appointment in France. Applicants must not attempt to travel to the UK while waiting.

What happens after the request: registration, family handling, major support and rights where officially stated?

After the Expression of Interest the Home Office reviews it (applicants should not chase progress). Family groups are assessed together, and if one person is unsuccessful the whole family group is unsuccessful. Successful applicants are granted entry clearance for up to 3 months, checked as fit to travel, given a travel document and escorted to transport; on arrival they are met after immigration control and helped to arrange travel. On this visa they cannot work, study or access public funds and must apply for another permission, such as a visa or asylum, to stay.

Which competent authority, UN body or official assistance channel should the person use?

The scheme is run by the Home Office and UK Visas and Immigration; the Expression of Interest is submitted through the official online form ('Register for the UK/European Applicant Transfer scheme'). Applicants should not contact the Home Office to ask about progress; the Home Office contacts them after the application has been considered.
