What exactly is this: asylum, temporary protection, humanitarian admission, resettlement or another protection mechanism?

Permission to stay as a Stateless person — for someone in the UK who has no nationality under Article 1(1) of the 1954 Statelessness Convention and cannot obtain permanent residence elsewhere. It is a route to settlement.

Which population, circumstances or geographic group does the mechanism cover?

Stateless persons in the UK who have taken all reasonable steps but failed to acquire or re-acquire a nationality and to establish permanent-residence rights in any relevant country (for UK-born children, a parent must have tried unsuccessfully to register the birth). Partners and dependent children are covered if they formed part of the family unit before the grant.

Where can protection be requested, and is this a direct application, border/in-country request, referral or other process?

A direct in-country application: apply online on gov.uk on the form 'Further Leave to Remain – Stateless person' while in the UK, with biometrics and identity established, submitting all reasonably available evidence of statelessness.

What happens after the request: registration, family handling, major support and rights where officially stated?

If granted: permission to stay for 5 years, with work, study and access to public funds. Partners and children get permission that expires with the principal's (same conditions); family members joining from abroad need entry clearance. After 5 continuous years with this permission, settlement can be applied for on form SET (O). Refusals can be challenged by Administrative Review.

Which competent authority, UN body or official assistance channel should the person use?

The checked official sources did not provide enough route-specific evidence to confirm the competent authority or official help channel.
