For the relevant traveller scope, is a visa, electronic authorisation, visa on arrival or no advance visa normally required?

Depends on nationality: some travellers must apply for a Standard Visitor visa before travelling, some need an electronic travel authorisation (ETA) allowing visits of up to 6 months, and some can visit for up to 6 months with neither. Academic visits and medical treatment lasting longer than 6 months always require a Standard Visitor visa. Rules may differ when travelling from Ireland, Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man.

What maximum stay, rolling-period rule, validity and entry rules apply?

Usually up to 6 months per visit. A long-term Standard Visitor visa is valid for 2, 5 or 10 years with a maximum of 6 months per visit (for under-18s, valid only up to 6 months after turning 18). Academics may stay up to 12 months. Visitors must not live in the UK for extended periods through frequent or successive visits, and a visa may be cancelled if travel history shows repeated extended stays. Applications can be made at the earliest 3 months before travel.

What important funds, accommodation, invitation, insurance, onward-travel or passport evidence may be required?

A passport or travel document valid for the whole stay; evidence of leaving at the end of the visit, of supporting oneself and dependants (or third-party funding) and of paying for the return or onward journey. Applications ask where the visitor will stay and the trip cost, and may ask for 10 years of travel history and details of anyone paying. Permitted paid engagements require a written invitation from a UK-based organisation or client; a TB test certificate is needed for visits over 6 months; visitors under 18 must show parental or guardian consent to travel and accommodation arrangements. Visa-exempt visitors must still meet the requirements and may be questioned at the border.

Where/how is permission obtained when required, and under what important circumstances can a stay be extended or changed?

Where needed, the application is made online before travelling; a Standard Visitor visa costs £135 for up to 6 months. An extension is possible in the UK only up to a total of 6 months (fee £1,172), applied for before current permission expires. Stays beyond 6 months are only possible for medical treatment patients (further 6-month extensions, no limit on number), academics still meeting the requirements, or graduates retaking the PLAB test or doing a clinical attachment.
