What exactly is this: asylum, temporary protection, humanitarian admission, resettlement or another protection mechanism?

Settlement (indefinite permission) for people who have been on a protection route — refugee status or humanitarian protection — for at least five years.

See recorded sources

Which population, circumstances or geographic group does the mechanism cover?

People who have, or were last granted, permission to stay as a refugee or with humanitarian protection following an asylum application made before 28 June 2022, or refugee permission to stay following an application on or after 28 June 2022; also partners and children granted permission as their dependants.

See recorded sources

Where can protection be requested, and is this a direct application, border/in-country request, referral or other process?

A direct online application from within the UK on gov.uk, using the form 'Apply to settle in the UK – refugee or humanitarian protection' (or 'Settlement Protection' where available), with biometrics and proof of identity and nationality.

See recorded sources

What happens after the request: registration, family handling, major support and rights where officially stated?

A safe return review is carried out (unless the Secretary of State directs otherwise) to check whether changes could lead to revocation or non-renewal of protection. Applications are refused for specified criminality (e.g. a custodial sentence of four years or more). If settlement is refused but protection is still due, a further permission of at least 30 months is granted. Partners and children can settle alongside the principal (Appendix Relationship with Partner / Appendix Children requirements).

Which competent authority, UN body or official assistance channel should the person use?

The checked official sources did not provide enough route-specific evidence to confirm the competent authority or official help channel.
