See recorded sources

What qualifying residence period is required and when does the period begin?

  • The appendix does not state explicitly when the 10-year period begins.

Which types of residence count fully, partially or not at all where the official rules specify this?

Counts: time with permission (except under the Ukraine Scheme or as a Visitor, Short-term Student (English language) or Seasonal Worker), time exempt from immigration control, time as an EEA national/family member exercising a right to reside under the 2016 EEA Regulations before 11pm on 31 December 2020 (and until 30 June 2021 or final EUSS determination), and time as a British citizen (unless deprived). Does not count: immigration bail, temporary admission or release, and overstaying between permissions (before or after 24 November 2016) or current overstaying.

What absence/continuity rules affect accumulation of the qualifying residence period?

The continuous residence requirement in Appendix Continuous Residence must be met for the whole qualifying period. The official source for this route does not itself set out the specific absence limits.

What other major conditions apply, how is the status obtained, and what renewal, document-validity, retention or loss rules matter?

Apply online on 'Apply to settle in the UK – long residence'; any fee must be paid, biometrics provided when required and a passport or other identity document provided. The applicant must not be in breach of immigration laws or on immigration bail, except where the Part Suitability exceptions for overstayers apply. Settlement requires English at CEFR B1 in speaking and listening (B2 for applications on or after 26 March 2027) and Knowledge of Life in the UK, unless exempt. Dependants cannot apply on this route. If settlement requirements are not met but the applicant may qualify for permission to stay, the application may be varied to 24 months' permission to stay on this route (no public funds; work and study permitted) or to Appendix FM or Appendix Private Life. The official source does not state document-validity, retention or loss rules for settlement.
