How does the application work at a high level, what rights does the family member receive, how long does the status last, and how can it become independent or longer-term where officially stated?

Apply online in the UK on form 'Settlement as a partner or parent' after a continuous qualifying period of 10 years with Appendix FM partner/parent permission (or other listed permissions; time on other settlement routes can count if the applicant did not enter illegally and had FM permission for at least one year), meeting continuous residence, English (CEFR B1; B2 for applications on or after 26 March 2027) and Knowledge of Life requirements. Successful applicants are granted settlement; otherwise the application may be varied to further permission to stay. Children born in the UK to a settled parent are British by birth; others may register.
