What exactly is this: asylum, temporary protection, humanitarian admission, resettlement or another protection mechanism?

A specific temporary permission to stay under Immigration Rules Appendix Domestic Worker who is a Victim of Modern Slavery, for victims of modern slavery who entered the UK as an Overseas Domestic Worker, a Domestic Worker in a Private Household, or a private servant in a diplomatic household; the maximum grant is 2 years and it is not a route to settlement.

Which population, circumstances or geographic group does the mechanism cover?

People who have, or last had, permission as an Overseas Domestic Worker, a Temporary Work – International Agreement private servant in a diplomatic household, or a Domestic Worker in a Private Household (or permission outside the Rules after a National Referral Mechanism referral with a positive Conclusive Grounds decision), and who have been referred into the National Referral Mechanism and received a positive Conclusive Grounds decision.

    DWMS 3.1. A person applying for permission to stay as a Domestic Worker who is a Victim of Modern Slavery must have, or have last been granted, permission on one of the following routes: (a) Overseas Domestic Worker; or (b) Temporary Work – International Agreement, as a private servant in a diplomatic household; or (c) Domestic Worker in a Private Household (d) outside these Rules having been referred into the National Referral Mechanism (NRM) and be in receipt of a positive Conclusive Grounds (CG) decision. DWMS 3.2. The applicant must have been referred into the National Referral Mechanism and be in receipt of a positive Conclusive Grounds decision.

Where can protection be requested, and is this a direct application, border/in-country request, referral or other process?

In the UK only, by direct application: apply online on the gov.uk form FLR(IR) while in the UK, within 28 days of being notified of the Conclusive Grounds decision (or of the outcome of a pending application); it is free to apply. The Conclusive Grounds decision itself comes after the police or another first responder organisation refers the case to the Single Competent Authority (SCA).

What happens after the request: registration, family handling, major support and rights where officially stated?

If granted: permission to stay for up to 2 years (combined total with any leave outside the Rules); no public funds; work permitted as a domestic worker in a private household (or as a private servant in a diplomatic household for the employer recorded in the Certificate of Sponsorship); study permitted subject to ATAS. No job offer is needed and the job can be changed. A refusal can be challenged by Administrative Review. The official source does not state how family members are handled.

Which competent authority, UN body or official assistance channel should the person use?

Contact the police or another first responder organisation, who can refer the case to the Single Competent Authority (SCA); the SCA decides whether the person is a victim of modern slavery or human trafficking and sends a conclusive grounds letter. The application to stay must then be made online within 28 days.
