What exactly is this: asylum, temporary protection, humanitarian admission, resettlement or another protection mechanism?

A sponsorship scheme, not asylum: the Homes for Ukraine Sponsorship Scheme allows Ukrainian nationals and their immediate family members to apply for permission to come to the UK if they have an approved sponsor. It is free to apply.

Which population, circumstances or geographic group does the mechanism cover?

Ukrainians, or immediate family members of a Ukrainian national granted or applying under the scheme, who were living in Ukraine on or immediately before 1 January 2022 (unless a child born after that date), are outside the UK and have an eligible UK-based sponsor. Immediate family means a spouse or civil partner, unmarried partner (living together for at least 2 years), fiancé(e) or proposed civil partner, child under 18, or parent (if the applicant is under 18). Children under 18 travelling without a parent can apply as ‘eligible minors’ with parental consent to join an approved sponsor.

Where can protection be requested, and is this a direct application, border/in-country request, referral or other process?

A direct online application made from outside the UK with a named sponsor (the applicant, the sponsor or both can complete the form); everyone, including children, makes a separate application. The sponsor must be a British or Irish citizen or settled in the UK and able to provide accommodation for at least 6 months. Applicants attend a visa application centre to give fingerprints and a photograph and must wait for a decision before travelling to the UK.

What happens after the request: registration, family handling, major support and rights where officially stated?

The Home Office aims to decide within 3 weeks. Successful applicants get an eVisa, can stay up to 18 months, and can live, work and study in the UK and access public funds; there is no immigration health surcharge or biometric enrolment fee. Family members apply separately. If refused because the sponsor is ineligible, the applicant must find a new sponsor and apply again. People given permission under the original Ukraine schemes may later apply to the Ukraine Permission Extension scheme.

Which competent authority, UN body or official assistance channel should the person use?

UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) is the contact for help; applicants to the Isle of Man or Guernsey Ukraine schemes must use that Crown Dependency’s process (ukraineguidance@gov.im; ukraine@gov.gg). Warning: permission to travel letters are no longer valid, and anyone attempting to travel or enter the UK with one may be refused entry and removed.
