What exact activity, role or purpose qualifies?

Offered work in the UK as a creative worker in the creative industries (e.g. actor, dancer, musician or film crew member), making a unique contribution to the UK labour market (e.g. internationally renowned or required for continuity); sportspeople can work in the UK with the International Sportsperson visa instead.

What organisation, institution, religious body, charity, teacher or host must support the activity?

A licensed sponsor must assign a certificate of sponsorship; the work must relate to the work of the sponsor organisation; several sponsors may each issue a certificate for multiple engagements.

What proves the placement, role, affiliation, experience or cultural/religious/voluntary activity?

The certificate of sponsorship reference number (valid 3 months from assignment) with sponsor information such as pay, plus a valid passport, savings evidence (unless the sponsor certifies maintenance) and relationship proof for dependants.

    A certificate of sponsorship is a reference number which holds information about the job and your personal details. It’s not an actual certificate or paper document. Your sponsor will give you your certificate of sponsorship reference number. They must also give you some other information to help you to apply, for example how much you’ll be paid. Your certificate of sponsorship is valid for 3 months from the date it is assigned to you.

Can the person receive salary, pocket money, accommodation, meals or reimbursement? Can they undertake other work?

The worker is paid, at least the minimum salary set by Equity, PACT or BECTU (except models, musicians or circuses) and at least the minimum wage. They may also do a second job in the same sector at the same level for up to 20 hours per week, or a job on the Skilled Worker immigration salary list for up to 20 hours per week, but cannot start their own business.

How long can they stay, can they change host/activity, can family accompany, and can the status be extended?

Up to 12 months, or the certificate of sponsorship period plus up to 28 days, whichever is shorter; entry no more than 14 days before the start date; the visa may be extended within the maximum. Changing sponsor requires a new application and does not extend the maximum stay; gaps between jobs cannot exceed 14 days. Partner and children can come as dependants if eligible.
