Limits of the record
  • The Regulations do not state which family relationship (if any) the accompanying person must have to the principal.

Who may sponsor or bring the family member, and what immigration/citizenship status must that person hold?

The application must include either evidence of the applicant's own financial capacity or a Permit to Enter and Reside Sponsorship form (Form 6) from a resident sponsor.

Limits of the record
  • The sponsor is required only to be 'resident'; no citizenship or specific permit status is stated.
  • Form 6 sponsorship is an alternative to own financial capacity, not a mandatory sponsor.

What is important for proving marriage, partnership, parentage, custody, dependency or another qualifying relationship?

The applicant must give the immigration officer the information and evidence the officer requires to show the applicant fits the purpose of the application. The official source does not list specific relationship documents.

Limits of the record
  • No specific relationship documents (e.g. marriage or birth certificates) are listed; the evidence is left to the immigration officer.

What important financial, accommodation, insurance or maintenance responsibilities apply?

The permit is granted only if the person satisfies the Principal Immigration Officer that they are of good health and character, meet the Act's requirements and hold a valid outward ticket or have paid a bond covering repatriation costs. The Minister may cancel the permit if the holder lacks sufficient lawful means of support for themselves or any dependants.

Limits of the record
  • No minimum funds amount, accommodation or health-insurance requirement is stated.

How does the application work at a high level, what rights does the family member receive, how long does the status last, and how can it become independent or longer-term where officially stated?

The application is made on Form 3. The permit may be granted for a maximum stay of one year and extended on a Form 4 application, but not more than three times in any five-year period unless the Minister, on the Citizenship Committee's advice, certifies it is in the national interest. The official source does not state the accompanying person's work or other rights or any path to independent or longer-term status.
