Permanent Residence status is an immigration status in the Islands that allows the person named on a Permanent Residence Certificate (PRC) to reside without restrictions on the length of time he or she can remain in the islands, and in some instances to work.

What application progression, residence obligations, family consequences or further citizenship/residence possibilities follow?

The great-grandchild PRC route requires three years of continuous lawful residence before application and a birth-certificate chain proving descent from an Islander. The page says a properly completed PRC application normally takes eight to ten weeks. A granted PRC allows residence without a fixed stay limit and this route expressly permits the applicant to work. Family endorsements are possible under the general PRC conditions, and naturalisation may be sought after 12 months of PRC status if its additional criteria are met. The government page lists revocation grounds, including ordinary residence outside the Islands for a continuous five years or more unless an endorsement authorises it, inability to support self and dependants, and breaching a no-work endorsement.

Limits of the record
  • The three-year requirement is an entry criterion, not an ongoing minimum stay after grant. Naturalisation and family endorsements require separate qualifications; the page does not guarantee either.
