For the relevant traveller scope, is a visa, electronic authorisation, visa on arrival or no advance visa normally required?

The e-Visa is an online entry authorisation. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that some applicants are exempt from a visa for touristic or business visits, others can obtain an e-Visa, and all other applicants must obtain a visa through Turkish representations abroad.

  • The list of nationalities eligible for an e-Visa, and any per-nationality conditions, are published country by country on the Ministry page and on www.evisa.gov.tr; no universal nationality claim should be made from this answer.
  • www.evisa.gov.tr could not be captured directly for this run because its robots policy blocked automated retrieval.

What short-visit purposes does this route cover?

The e-Visa is only valid when the purpose of travel is tourism or commerce. For other purposes, such as work and study, visas are given by Turkish Embassies or Consulates.

What maximum stay, rolling-period rule, validity and entry rules apply?

The length of stay provided by a visa or visa exemption cannot exceed 90 days within each 180 days, and this binds all foreigners travelling to Türkiye. Turkish consular offices may issue visas with a maximum duration of stay of 90 days. Holding two passports does not allow 90 days on each within the last 180 days. With a valid visa no residence permit is needed for up to 90 days; to stay longer a short-term residence permit must be obtained.

What important funds, accommodation, invitation, insurance, onward-travel or passport evidence may be required?

The passport must have an expiration date at least 60 days beyond the duration of stay of the e-Visa, and the Ministry advises a travel document valid for at least 6 months from arrival. All applicants are required to have medical insurance valid during their stay. Holders of travel documents rather than national passports must obtain a visa from Turkish missions beforehand regardless of the visa regime for that country.

Where/how is permission obtained when required, and under what important circumstances can a stay be extended or changed?

Visitors who are not exempt obtain their visa or a consular appointment through the Pre-Application System for Turkish Sticker Visa (visa.gov.tr); applicants who meet the requirements are directed by that system to the e-Visa system (evisa.gov.tr). Fees for e-Visas obtained via the e-Visa website are lower than for visas obtained on arrival at Turkish airports. Foreigners who would stay beyond the duration of a visa or visa exemption, or longer than ninety days, should obtain a residence permit.
