Which travellers require a transit visa/permission and which officially documented exemptions are important?

Türkiye's visa types include single transit and double transit visas. Whether a traveller needs a visa depends on nationality: some applicants are exempt for touristic or business visits, others can obtain an e-Visa, and all other applicants need a visa through Turkish representations abroad. Albanian official and ordinary passport holders are exempt for travels with touristic purposes and transit up to 90 days within six months; Australian ordinary passport holders are exempt for touristic visits and transit travel for 90 days within any 180-day period (Australian official passport holders need a visa). Holders of a country's travel documents (as opposed to its passports) must obtain a visa from Turkish missions beforehand regardless of that country's visa regime.

Limits of the record
  • The nationality-by-nationality visa matrix is published country by country on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs page and is not reproduced here.
  • The Ministry pages state no airside-transit exemption.

Can the traveller remain airside, and under what circumstances must immigration control be crossed?

A traveller who does not leave the airport transit lounge does not need a transit visa; anyone leaving it must apply for a visa at the nearest Turkish representation. Foreigners using airport transit areas may still be subject to document checks by the competent authorities.

  • The MFA statement is an FAQ answer (example: landing in İstanbul); it does not list cases such as airport change or overnight stays.

What officially documented baggage collection, terminal, separate-ticket or self-transfer situations affect the immigration requirement?

The checked official sources did not provide enough route-specific evidence to confirm the baggage, terminal-change and self-transfer rules.

Limits of the record
  • Searched all TR extracts for baggage, terminal, separate ticket, self-transfer and connection rules; none is stated. Airport operating procedure must not be inferred from immigration rules.

What maximum transit period, overnight, airport-change or multiple-stop rules matter?

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs states no transit-specific maximum period, overnight, airport-change or multiple-stop rule. The general rule is that the length of stay provided by a visa or visa exemption cannot exceed 90 days within each 180 days, binding on all foreigners travelling to Türkiye, and consular offices may issue visas with a maximum duration of stay of 90 days.

Limits of the record
  • No transit-specific maximum period, overnight rule, airport-change rule or multiple-stop rule is stated on the Ministry pages.
  • The pages do not state what distinguishes a double transit visa from a single transit visa.

If permission is required, what permission is it, where/how is it obtained, and what core onward-travel evidence is required?

Where a visa is required, visitors who are not exempt obtain it or schedule a consular appointment through the Pre-Application System for Turkish Sticker Visa (www.visa.gov.tr); applicants who meet the requirements are directed by that system to the e-Visa system (www.evisa.gov.tr), and in countries without a Turkish consular representation online scheduling with the nearest accredited consular office can be used. Applying at least one month before travel is recommended. All applicants must have medical insurance valid during their stay, the passport must be valid at least 60 days beyond the duration of stay of the visa, e-Visa or exemption, and a visa does not guarantee an absolute right of entry.
