Which types of income/assets are accepted according to the official source?

Two forms of money count, and one of them has to sit in Thailand. The Ministry asks for a bank statement showing a balance of at least 3,000,000 THB in Thailand; alternatively, a bank statement of at least 1,800,000 THB together with proof of annual income of no less than 1,200,000 THB. The source of the income is not restricted to a pension: the biography form asks simply for occupation, monthly income and amount of savings. No investment, property or business asset is mentioned as qualifying.

What income, savings or financial-resources threshold applies and how does family affect it where officially specified?

The threshold is 3,000,000 THB held in a bank in Thailand, or 1,800,000 THB held in Thailand plus annual income of at least 1,200,000 THB. Health insurance must also be issued by an insurer in Thailand with outpatient benefits of no less than 40,000 THB and inpatient benefits of no less than 400,000 THB, plus a Foreign Insurance Certificate. The official source states no additional threshold for a spouse or other family member.

Limits of the record
  • The document states no separate financial threshold for a spouse or dependant, and does not say whether family members can be included in the application at all.

Can the holder work locally, run a business or perform other economic activity? What is the family position?

No work of any kind is allowed: the visa is for those who wish to stay without the intention of working, and the biography form requires the applicant to affirm that under no circumstances will they engage in any profession or occupation during their stay in Thailand. On family, the official source only has a spouse field on the biography form and grants no dependant status, sets no family threshold and describes no accompanying-family procedure.

The official source describes no renewal procedure beyond the second five-year period, no physical-presence obligation and no route to permanent residence.
