What medical treatment/purpose does the route cover and which applicant role does it address: patient, donor or another medical purpose?

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists "medical treatments" among the activities a foreigner may stay in Thailand to participate in under the Destination Thailand Visa, and its second purpose of visit is "Thai soft power-related activities, e.g., Muay Thai, Thai culinary training, and medical treatment". The applicant role addressed is the patient: the checklist document for this purpose is a letter of appointment from a hospital or medical centre. Neither document names qualifying conditions or procedures, and neither addresses donors.

Limits of the record
  • Neither document says which treatments or procedures qualify, and neither addresses organ or tissue donors.

What acceptance, appointment, referral, treatment plan or healthcare-provider documentation is important?

One document carries the medical side: a letter of appointment from the hospital or medical centre, which the checklist lists alongside a letter of acceptance from an institute or company organising activities as the alternative proof for this purpose. The Brussels leaflet uses the same pairing: an invitation or acceptance letter regarding the activity of the host organisation in Thailand, or the letter of appointment from the hospital. Neither document requires a referral, a treatment plan, a cost estimate, or accreditation of the facility.

How must treatment costs, living costs and insurance be demonstrated?

For DTV medical-treatment activity, the national financial baseline is evidence of at least THB 500,000 together with evidence of the qualifying activity, such as the relevant hospital/medical appointment. The national DTV rule does not set a separate national treatment-cost deposit or insurance amount; missions may require additional filing documents.

Can a carer/companion accompany the patient? Who qualifies and what separate/linked permission applies?

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that dependents, including the spouse and children under 20 years old, can also benefit from this type of visa as the third listed purpose of visit, on proof of marriage or relationship with the DTV visa holder, such as a marriage certificate, birth certificate or family record book, together with the holder's passport page and DTV visa. Neither document provides for any other companion or carer or describes a separate carer permission.

Limits of the record
  • Neither document provides for a carer who is not a spouse or a child under 20, and neither says whether the dependant's stay is tied to the patient's.

How long can the patient stay, what happens if treatment continues longer, and what official extension or follow-up mechanism exists?

The visa is valid for 5 years, and the period of each stay is a maximum of 180 days, extendable once in the country through immigration, so treatment running past 180 days depends on that single extension or on leaving and returning under the same multiple-entry visa. Neither document states how long the extension lasts, whether a further extension is possible, or whether there is any medical-specific mechanism if treatment continues longer.

Limits of the record
  • Neither document states the length of the in-country extension, nor any medical-specific mechanism if treatment outlasts the permitted stay.
