Which family relationships qualify?

Two relationships qualify and no others: the spouse, and children under 20 years old, of a DTV visa holder. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs makes this the third listed purpose of visit for the Destination Thailand Visa and repeats it in the description of the visa, stating that dependents, including the spouse and children under 20 years old, can also benefit from this type of visa. Parents, siblings and adult children are not covered by either document.

Who may sponsor or bring the family member, and what immigration/citizenship status must that person hold?

The sponsor is the main DTV visa holder, and their status is proved by their own visa rather than by any Thai residence or citizenship. The checklist requires the personal details of the DTV visa holder: a valid government-issued ID card, the passport biodata page, and the DTV visa approval. The Brussels leaflet asks for the same in shorter form, the passport page and the DTV visa of the holder. So the sponsor must themselves hold a DTV, obtained under the workcation or Thai soft-power purposes.

What is important for proving marriage, partnership, parentage, custody, dependency or another qualifying relationship?

An official record of the relationship is required: proof of marriage or relationship with the DTV visa holder, which the Brussels leaflet spells out as a marriage certificate, birth certificate, or family record book. The checklist adds the holder-side evidence, a valid government-issued ID card, the passport biodata page and the DTV visa approval of the DTV visa holder, and requires all documents to be provided in English or Thai. For a child the age limit itself is part of the proof, since the purpose covers only children under 20 years old.

What important financial, accommodation, insurance or maintenance responsibilities apply?

A DTV dependant application is based on the relationship to the principal DTV holder and the DTV financial baseline of at least THB 500,000, with the documentary form set by the competent mission. Mission-specific currency equivalents do not create different national DTV thresholds. The official source does not state accommodation or insurance requirements.

How does the application work at a high level, what rights does the family member receive, how long does the status last, and how can it become independent or longer-term where officially stated?

The dependant applies with the same document set as any DTV applicant, submitted online, with the original passport valid within 6 months from the travel date, a photograph taken within the past six months, a completed visa application form and a copy of the passport biodata page; the process takes approximately 4 weeks or longer if the application is incomplete. The visa is valid for 5 years and each stay is a maximum of 180 days, extendable once in the country through immigration. Neither document says whether the dependant may work or study, whether their permission ends if the main holder's does, or whether the status can become independent or lead to any longer-term residence.

Limits of the record
  • Neither document states work or study rights for the dependant, what happens if the main holder's visa ends, or any route to independent or longer-term status.
