Which family relationships qualify?

The foreign spouse or children of a person who has household registration in the Taiwan Area.

What is important for proving marriage, partnership, parentage, custody, dependency or another qualifying relationship?

For dependent family members the guidelines ask for proof of family relationship (marriage certificate or birth certificate) and identification documents of the family member being depended upon; adult children unable to live independently due to disability need relevant documentation.

What important financial, accommodation, insurance or maintenance responsibilities apply?

Applicants must possess sufficient assets or skills to be self-supporting, but this does not apply to spouses of nationals with household registration in the Taiwan Area; where required, proof can be e.g. average monthly income in Taiwan exceeding twice the minimum wage over the past year, or property in Taiwan valued over NTD 5,000,000 held for more than one (1) year.

How does the application work at a high level, what rights does the family member receive, how long does the status last, and how can it become independent or longer-term where officially stated?

Apply at the National Immigration Agency service station where the applicant resides; applicants must have legally resided in Taiwan for more than ten (10) years with at least 183 days of residence per year for five (5) years; processing time is fourteen (14) days and the fee NTD 10,000; permanent residency may be revoked and the Alien Permanent Resident Certificate cancelled if average annual residence falls below 183 days in the most recent five (5) years.
