What qualifying residence period is required and when does the period begin?

For the early grant of the C settlement permit, the applicant must have held a residence permit (Aufenthaltsbewilligung) without interruption for five years; earlier stays and stays of a temporary nature in Switzerland (education, study, medical treatment, cure, short stays, etc.) are not counted. Stays for education or further training are, however, counted if, after they ended, the person held a residence permit for permanent residence without interruption for two years (Art. 34 para. 5 AIG) or the stay under a short-stay permit was of a permanent nature.

Stays for education or further training are, however, counted if, after they ended, the person held a residence permit for permanent residence without interruption for two years (Art. 34 para. 5 AIG) or the stay under a short-stay permit was of a permanent nature.
