For the relevant traveller scope, is a visa, electronic authorisation, visa on arrival or no advance visa normally required?

Citizens of countries whose nationals need an entry visa for Sweden and the Schengen area must have a Schengen visa to visit for up to 90 days. No Schengen visa is needed by citizens or long-term residents of another Schengen country, holders of a residence permit there, or citizens of countries whose nationals do not need an entry visa to visit Sweden.

Stay of up to 90 days in a 180-day period in the Schengen area. A multiple-entry visa can be valid for a maximum of five years, with each stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period. What important funds, accommodation, invitation, insurance, onward-travel or passport evidence may be required?

Visa-exempt travellers are checked by the border police for: a passport valid at least three months after leaving Schengen, a round-trip ticket with return within 90 days, an invitation or hotel booking, and money for subsistence and return (SEK 700 per day, sometimes lower). Visa applicants need a passport valid at least three months after the visa expires, issued within ten years, with two blank pages, and medical travel insurance covering at least €30,000 valid in all Schengen countries.

Where/how is permission obtained when required, and under what important circumstances can a stay be extended or changed?

Apply before the trip, no more than six months ahead; a decision normally takes 15 days. In many countries applications go through the external provider VFS Global, elsewhere to a Swedish embassy or consulate-general or another Schengen country representing Sweden. Extensions are decided by the Swedish Migration Agency. Stays over 90 days require a visitor's residence permit.
