What family, citizenship, ethnic, historical or former-resident connection creates access to this route?

Two distinct connections open this route. The first is Swedish origin: people who previously held Swedish citizenship and lost it, and people whose parents or grandparents were Swedish from birth – granted, the Migration Agency states, only in exceptional cases. The second is a previously held Swedish permanent residence permit: a person who previously lived in Sweden with a permanent residence permit can be granted a new residence permit on the strength of those ties.

How far back can the qualifying connection extend, and what important transmission limitations exist?

The ancestry branch covers people who previously held Swedish citizenship and people whose parents or grandparents were Swedish from birth. Swedish ancestry alone is not enough: the applicant must also show ties to Sweden through lengthy periods spent in the country, Swedish education or knowledge of Swedish. For people who previously lived in Sweden, the reach is temporal: after no more than three years abroad, at least four years of previous residence with a residence permit are required; after more than three years abroad, at least ten years, or other grounds for a new permit.

  • Which generations of ancestry qualify is stated only in the sentence cited for R1 (protected) and is not repeated here.

What records are central to proving the lineage or historical connection?

Central records are documents proving the applicant's ties to Sweden, correctly made passport copies, and a description of the specific reasons for moving to Sweden; for a previous permanent-residence holder the reasons for leaving Sweden are also considered. Documents must be in Swedish or English; translations must be certified and accompanied by a copy in the original language. The official source does not name specific lineage records such as birth or citizenship certificates.

Does the pathway result in a visa, residence permit, right of return, citizenship or another status?

The route produces a time-limited residence permit, not citizenship and not permanent residence. It can be granted for a maximum of two years, and never for longer than the applicant's passport is valid.

What application progression, residence obligations, family consequences or further citizenship/residence possibilities follow?

The permit can be extended and gives the right to work and study. Children under 18 are included in the applicant's application; children over 18 must apply themselves. The Migration Agency compares ties to Sweden with ties to the country of origin, including whether the applicant has their own family there; starting a family outside Sweden makes a permit based on ties harder to obtain. The official source does not describe any progression to permanent residence or Swedish citizenship.
