What exactly is this: asylum, temporary protection, humanitarian admission, resettlement or another protection mechanism?

International protection (asylum). Sweden is a party to the UN Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees, must examine each application individually, and must grant a residence permit to anyone who is a refugee according to the EU's common rules.

Which population, circumstances or geographic group does the mechanism cover?

People with a well-founded fear of persecution due to race, nationality, religious or political views, gender, sexual orientation, or belonging to a particular social group. The persecution can come from individuals or from the authorities of the country of origin; the applicant must show it is likely that the national authorities are unable or unwilling to protect them.

Where can protection be requested, and is this a direct application, border/in-country request, referral or other process?

Protection cannot be requested before arriving in Sweden; the person must be in Sweden or at a border with Sweden. At entry, the person tells the border police, who refer the person to the Swedish Migration Agency to register the application. If already in Sweden, apply at a Swedish Migration Agency Reception and Return Centre in Malmö, Gothenburg, Stockholm or Boden.

What happens after the request: registration, family handling, major support and rights where officially stated?

After the request, the police or the Swedish Migration Agency make a first identity check; the applicant is fingerprinted (checked for applications, permits or travel bans in other EU countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland) and has a first health examination. Families apply together and are summoned to a joint interview. Applicants are assigned a place in Swedish Migration Agency accommodation and, without their own money, may be entitled to financial aid.

Which competent authority, UN body or official assistance channel should the person use?

Protection is requested from the border police at the Swedish border or, in Sweden, from the police, the Swedish Migration Agency or the Swedish Prison and Probation Service. Applicants are told about the right to free legal advice, which must be requested. The page lists support organisations, including Amnesty International and Caritas Sweden. Providing inaccurate identity information is illegal: protection may be revoked with expulsion, and suspected fraud is reported to the police.
