Limits of the record
  • Only revocation for no longer being resident / long time abroad exists (protected R5 citation, concerns loss of the status, not accumulation); no absence rule for the qualifying period.

What other major conditions apply, how is the status obtained, and what renewal, document-validity, retention or loss rules matter?

Financial maintenance and good conduct are required. In most cases the application is made when extending the current residence permit; the qualifying period, process and documents depend on the existing permit. The status has no fixed validity period. It may be revoked if the holder no longer resides in Sweden, has been abroad for a long time, or deliberately supplied inaccurate information or withheld information important to the decision.

To be granted a permanent residence permit, you must have lived in Sweden with a residence permit for a certain period of time. In most cases, you apply for a permanent residence permit when you submit your application for an extension of your current residence permit. For this reason, the length of time you must have lived in Sweden with a residence permit, the application process, and the documents you must attach depend on the type of residence permit you have today.

If you have a permanent residence permit in Sweden but are no longer resident here, or have been abroad for a long time for some other reason, the Swedish Migration Agency can revoke your permit.
