Which family relationships qualify?

Spouses, cohabiting partners, registered partners and unmarried children under 21; in some cases children over 21 and other close relatives who depend financially on the British citizen or their partner; a non-British parent who financially supports their British child (without needing to show dependency); and parents/legal guardians of children studying in Sweden. A family relationship established after 31 December 2020 does not qualify for residence status.

Who may sponsor or bring the family member, and what immigration/citizenship status must that person hold?

The sponsor is a British citizen living in Sweden with residence status or permanent residence status; they must continue to meet the conditions for right of residence as an employee, self-employed person, student or person with sufficient funds, unless they have a certificate of permanent residence status.

What is important for proving marriage, partnership, parentage, custody, dependency or another qualifying relationship?

Spouses provide documents such as a marriage certificate. Cohabiting partners provide documents showing they lived together, e.g. population register extracts showing the same address, joint accounts or insurance policies, or bills sent jointly or to the shared address. Children provide a birth certificate or other document naming the parents, adoption papers if adopted, and, if under 18, a separate paper stating their views. Dependent parents provide documents (such as birth certificates) showing the relationship and documents showing how they depend on the family member for basic needs.

What important financial, accommodation, insurance or maintenance responsibilities apply?

If the British family member is or was a student, European Health Insurance Cards for the applicant and the family member must be submitted (or a copy of the family member's comprehensive health insurance certificate for the whole stay). If the family member has sufficient funds or is retired, information on accommodation and housing costs in Sweden is required, and applicants not listed in the Swedish Population Register must also submit a certificate of social security cover from their country of origin or proof of comprehensive health insurance for the whole stay.

Limits of the record
  • The page states no maintenance amount for the family member.

How does the application work at a high level, what rights does the family member receive, how long does the status last, and how can it become independent or longer-term where officially stated?

Family members moving to Sweden must apply for residence status within three months of arriving. Each family member, including children, makes their own application, submitted with documents to Migrationsverket by post or via the e-service, which is also used to apply for a certificate of permanent residence status. Applying is free for British citizens and their family members. The official source does not state what rights residence status gives the family member, how long it lasts or the conditions for moving to permanent residence status.
