What is important for proving marriage, partnership, parentage, custody, dependency or another qualifying relationship?

Married applicants provide a marriage certificate, marriage record or similar; cohabiting partners provide documents showing they have lived together (e.g. population registration certificates, a joint rental contract or proof of joint home purchase); children provide documents such as a birth record, birth certificate or court decision showing the person in Sweden is their parent/legal guardian. The person in Sweden must also write a letter confirming that they will live together in Sweden.

How does the application work at a high level, what rights does the family member receive, how long does the status last, and how can it become independent or longer-term where officially stated?

The family member fills in the application with the required documents and names an embassy or consulate-general to show the passport (sometimes also for an interview); the application must be made from outside Sweden and the permit granted before entry. The permit is granted for the same period as the student (never longer than the passport is valid) and can be extended; a granted residence and work permit gives the right to live and work in Sweden while valid. The official source does not state how the family member's status can become independent or longer-term.
