The parent in Sweden must have Swedish citizenship, a permanent residence permit, permanent right of residence, a permanent residence card, a temporary residence permit due to a need for protection or exceptionally distressing circumstances, or a temporary residence permit on the grounds of ties to a partner. The application must be made by a parent or other adult with the legal right to represent the child in the child's country of origin.

What is important for proving marriage, partnership, parentage, custody, dependency or another qualifying relationship?

The parent-child relationship must be proven by DNA analysis, which the Swedish Migration Agency offers in appropriate cases. The application must include a birth record or birth certificate naming the child's parents; a court decision if the parent in Sweden has sole custody (or a death certificate if the other parent is deceased); and, if the other parent/legal guardian stays in the country of origin, their statement of consent plus a copy of their passport or other identity document.

What important financial, accommodation, insurance or maintenance responsibilities apply?

The parent in Sweden must be able to support both themselves and the child and have a home of sufficient size and standard for both; some people may be exempt from the maintenance requirement.

Limits of the record
  • The page does not state the maintenance amount or who is exempt.

How does the application work at a high level, what rights does the family member receive, how long does the status last, and how can it become independent or longer-term where officially stated?

The application must be made by a parent or other adult with the legal right to represent the child in the child's country of origin. The child can never be granted a residence permit for longer than their passport is valid. The official source does not state the rights the child receives, the standard permit duration or the path to independent or longer-term status.
