Which athletes, coaches, technicians, officials or other sports professionals does the pathway cover?

The pathway covers athletes and coaches who have been awarded a contract with a sports club or sports association in Sweden.

What club, federation, governing body or recognised organisation relationship is required?

A written contract with a club or association in Sweden affiliated with the Swedish Sports Confederation is required, signed by both parties. The Swedish Sports Confederation must additionally certify that the employment is of significant importance for the positive development of the sport.

What sporting level, achievement, professional status, recognition or other sports-specific condition distinguishes the pathway?

Football players and coaches must be in at least Division 1 (men) or Damallsvenskan or Elitettan (women); basketball players and coaches in the Swedish Basketball League or Basketettan; men’s ice hockey players must play or train in the SHL, Hockeyallsvenskan or Hockeyettan, and women in the Swedish Women’s Hockey League. The pre-tax salary must be at least one third of the price base amount at the time of application, and health and accident insurance must be customary for the sport and level.

What sporting/work activity is permitted, what club or activity restrictions exist, and what is the family position?

Family (spouses, registered or cohabiting partners, children under 21, and dependent children over 21 in special cases) can apply at the same time and be granted a permit for the same period as the holder, but never longer than their passports are valid; adult family members and children turning at least 16 that year may work.
