Which family relationships qualify?

A relative living in Sweden who is not the applicant's spouse, cohabiting partner or child; close family members (married or cohabiting couples and their children) are not covered by this route, and the agency says such permits are very difficult to obtain.

Who may sponsor or bring the family member, and what immigration/citizenship status must that person hold?

The relative in Sweden must hold either a permanent residence permit or a temporary residence permit due to a need for protection or particularly distressing circumstances, with a well-founded prospect of being granted a residence permit for a longer period.

What is important for proving marriage, partnership, parentage, custody, dependency or another qualifying relationship?

The applicant must submit documents showing how they are related to the person in Sweden, certificate(s) that they are dependent on each other and find it difficult to live apart, and documents showing they lived together immediately before the relative moved to Sweden. The dependency must be social and emotional, must already have existed in the country of origin, must go beyond usual family dependence, and cannot be solely financial. The applicant is interviewed about the relationship.

What important financial, accommodation, insurance or maintenance responsibilities apply?

The relative in Sweden must be able to support both themselves and the applicant and have a home large enough to house them both; some people may be exempt from this maintenance requirement. The official source does not state the maintenance amount or who is exempt.

How does the application work at a high level, what rights does the family member receive, how long does the status last, and how can it become independent or longer-term where officially stated?

The applicant fills in the application with the required documents and names a Swedish embassy or consulate-general for the interview. The permit is granted for a maximum of two years (never longer than the passport is valid), can be extended, and gives the right to work and study. The Swedish Migration Agency states that new rules for immigration due to family ties apply from 1 October 2026, affecting people applying for, or wanting to extend, a residence permit to live with a family member in Sweden.
