Where/how is permission obtained when required, and under what important circumstances can a stay be extended or changed?

Under the regulation, stays of up to one week are permitted via the police and longer stays via the Ministry of Justice. The Jan Mayen station's current guidelines state that visits of up to 24 hours are authorised by the Station Commander, up to one week by the Chief of Police in Nordland, and beyond one week by the Norwegian Ministry of Justice; visits for research or any purpose other than tourism go through the State Administrator in Nordland. Any sea landing must also be coordinated in advance with the Station Commander.
