How does the application work at a high level, what rights does the family member receive, how long does the status last, and how can it become independent or longer-term where officially stated?

Documents are submitted to the Department of Immigration and Emigration - Residence Visa Division; once approved, the visa endorsement is issued on the applicant's passport. The visa duration is one year; holders may reside legally for up to 12 months, renewable annually, and may open personal bank accounts and enter property rental or lease agreements. For extension, the applicant must submit the first-issuance documents plus proof of tax registration via the Inland Revenue Department. Local employment within Sri Lanka is not permitted. No route to independent or longer-term status is stated.
