Which remote workers qualify: foreign employees, freelancers, company owners or other remote professionals?

Qualifying remote workers are foreign nationals aged 18 or older engaged in remote employment, freelancing, or owning a business not registered in Sri Lanka, working remotely from Sri Lanka while serving clients or companies based outside the country.

What income threshold applies, how must it be demonstrated, and how does family affect it where stated?

Minimum monthly income remittance of USD 2,000 is required for the main applicant. If there are more than two dependants, an additional USD 500 per month must be remitted for each dependant beyond that count.

The applicant's employment, freelance clients or own business must serve clients outside Sri Lanka. Local employment within Sri Lanka is not permitted and all income must be earned from foreign sources.

What immigration-relevant tax/residence information is officially stated, and what longer-term residence direction exists?

On extension, the applicant must submit, along with the documents required for first issuance, proof of tax registration with the Inland Revenue Department. Holders may reside legally in Sri Lanka for up to 12 months, renewable annually, and must comply with all immigration laws, tax and legal obligations in Sri Lanka.
