For the relevant traveller scope, is a visa, electronic authorisation, visa on arrival or no advance visa normally required?

The visa requirement depends on nationality. Slovenia applies the EU visa regime (Union acquis): nationals of countries on the EU visa list must hold a short-stay (C type) Schengen visa, while nationals of the other countries do not need a visa. There are exceptions to the visa requirement for certain types of traveller (e.g. diplomats, armed forces, refugees, pupils on school excursions). The source points to the EU list rather than giving a full nationality matrix.

  • The purpose list in the source covers visas and residence permits together; it does not give an exhaustive list of purposes specific to the C type visa.

What maximum stay, rolling-period rule, validity and entry rules apply?

A C type visa allows entry and temporary stay of up to 90 days. During the visa validity period the holder may stay provided the total stay in Schengen countries does not exceed 90 days in any 180-day period, or until the visa expires, whichever is sooner. For multiple-entry visas, the passport must expire at least 3 months after departure from the last country visited.

What important funds, accommodation, invitation, insurance, onward-travel or passport evidence may be required?

For a C-visa application, the official consular checklist requires a passport issued within the last10years, at least two blank pages and validity at least3months after the last intended departure from Schengen; insurance for emergency medical/hospital care and repatriation including death, with at least EUR30000 coverage throughout Schengen for the entire stay; documents establishing purpose, subsistence funds and accommodation. The government guidance also requires evidence of intention to return. Its central instructions distinguish a certified/registered guarantee letter where the guarantor provides accommodation or subsistence for the stay and return, from a signed invitation letter where the host does not provide them; the latter need not be certified or registered under those instructions. Consulates can request additional documents.

Letter of guarantee and Invitation letter When applying for a visa, a third-country national must submit an appropriate visa application and the required documents, which may differ depending on their country of origin. The list of documents is published on the websites of diplomatic missions and consular posts. In the visa application procedure, the applicant must also submit a letter of guarantee (available in the Form below), which has been certified and registered at the relevant administrative unit in Slovenia or an Invitation letter.
