How does the application work at a high level, what rights does the family member receive, how long does the status last, and how can it become independent or longer-term where officially stated?

Applications are processed within 6 months if all documents are in order (some take longer); successful applicants receive an In-Principle Approval and are granted PR once they fulfil the necessary conditions. PR allows residence in Singapore on a permanent basis; a valid Re-Entry Permit is required to travel out and return as a PR. Male PRs are required to serve National Service unless exempted.
