How does the application work at a high level, what rights does the family member receive, how long does the status last, and how can it become independent or longer-term where officially stated?

Applications are processed within 6 months if all documents are in order (some take longer); successful applicants receive an In-Principle Approval and are granted PR once they fulfil the necessary conditions. PR allows residence in Singapore on a permanent basis. Male applicants granted PR under their parents' sponsorship are liable for National Service: they must register at 16 and a half and are scheduled for full-time NS at the earliest opportunity upon reaching 18.
