Which travellers require a transit visa/permission and which officially documented exemptions are important?

The following are exempt from seeking an entry visa before entering Ascension, or permission to remain: active members of HM Armed Forces and their accompanying dependants; persons in the service of the Crown in right of the Government of Ascension; persons in the service of the Crown in right of the Governments of the United Kingdom, the Falkland Islands, St Helena or Tristan da Cunha visiting on official duties and their dependants; persons in the service of the United States Government or of a contractor of that Government under the Bahamas Long Range Proving Ground Agreement and their dependants; NATO personnel visiting on official duties and their dependants; exempt dependants; and any other persons or classes the Governor appoints by notice in the Gazette. The official source does not state which nationalities must hold a transit visa.

Can the traveller remain airside, and under what circumstances must immigration control be crossed?

A person who lands in Ascension but remains in a secure area approved by the Administrator for the temporary accommodation of passengers who are in transit is deemed not to have landed in Ascension for the purposes of this policy.
