Which population, circumstances or geographic group does the mechanism cover?

Foreign nationals who are or have been victims of criminal offences linked to trafficking in persons or assistance to illegal immigration, even if they entered illegally or do not meet the ordinary residence conditions.

Where can protection be requested, and is this a direct application, border/in-country request, referral or other process?

Not a direct application: the procedure starts after the authorities responsible for the investigation notify AIMA. The permit is granted after the reflection period if the stay is needed for investigations, the person clearly wishes to cooperate, and has broken ties with the suspected perpetrators (earlier if cooperation is unequivocal; identified trafficking victims may be exempt from the first two conditions).

What happens after the request: registration, family handling, major support and rights where officially stated?

Public authorities or victim-protection associations inform a potentially eligible person of this possibility; a reflection period precedes the permit. The official source does not state support measures, family handling or the length of the reflection period.
