What records are central to proving the lineage or historical connection?

If born in Portugal, the certificate of the court decision that decreed the adoption is needed. If born outside Portugal, the applicant's legalised birth certificate and the certificate of the court decision that authorised the adoption, showing it is final, are needed; if a foreign court authorised it and that country has no international-adoption agreement with Portugal, a Portuguese court must review and confirm the decision. In all cases, the Portuguese adopter's birth certificate is needed, unless the registry office, year and registration number in Portugal are identified.
