What family, citizenship, ethnic, historical or former-resident connection creates access to this route?

The qualifying connection is being adopted by a Portuguese national, provided the adoption was full, occurred before the applicant turned 18, and before 8 October 1981.

See recorded sources

How far back can the qualifying connection extend, and what important transmission limitations exist?

The connection is having been adopted by a Portuguese national; the adoption must be full (plena), made before the adoptee turned 18 and before 8 October 1981, and the period to appeal the court judgment declaring the adoption must have ended before 8 October 1981. The official source does not describe any transmission of the connection to other generations.

Limits of the record
  • Source does not address transmission beyond the adopted person.

What records are central to proving the lineage or historical connection?

If born in Portugal, the certificate of the court decision that decreed the adoption is needed. If born abroad, the legalised birth certificate (apostille or Portuguese consulate visa if foreign; certified Portuguese translation if not in Portuguese) and the certificate of the final court decision that authorised the adoption are needed; a foreign decision must be reviewed and confirmed by a Portuguese court if that country has no international adoption agreement with Portugal. In all cases, the Portuguese adoptive parent's birth certificate is needed unless the registry office, year and registration number in Portugal are identified.
