What exactly is the official special programme/status and why does it exist?

The D-type national visa permits entry to Poland and a continuous or multiple stay totalling more than 90 days during the visa's validity, but not longer than one year; it also allows travel in other Schengen states for up to 90 days in a 180-day period.

Which specific population, role, circumstance or historical/legal situation does it cover?

Foreigners planning a stay in Poland longer than 90 days within a year. Some purposes are issued only as national visas: studies (first/second-cycle, long-cycle master's, doctoral school), scientific research or development work, internship, European volunteering, repatriation and close family of a repatriate, and Karta Polaka rights and related family.

What circumstance, event, relationship, nomination, invitation or status activates access?

A planned stay over 90 days for a specific purpose: the main purpose of the trip is indicated in the application, and the specific purposes and resulting rights are defined in Art. 60 of the Aliens Act; the consul marks the purpose on the visa sticker.

What sponsor, authority, nomination, certification, evidence or other step must occur before the status can be obtained?

Applicants must register with e-Konsulat and submit a travel document; a completed and signed application; a photograph; proof of fee (standard 135 euros); medical travel insurance of at least EUR 30,000 or Polish public health insurance; and documents confirming purpose and conditions of stay, sufficient funds for living and return, and intention to leave before the visa expires.

What immigration status and rights result, how long do they last, can family be included, and what happens if the special qualifying circumstance ends?

Result: a national (D) visa allowing stay in Poland for more than 90 days up to one year and travel in other Schengen states up to 90 days in 180; the authorised stay is set in the issued visa. The visa is revoked if the grounds for its refusal arise (Art. 90 Aliens Act).
